Emperor Qin protected his empire by building a long wall along China's northern border. Qin also extended this wall to the west. The was called the "10,000 Li Long Wall." (A li is about three tenths of a mile) Later this long wall became known as the Great Wall of China.
Construction of the great wall took a whole decade. A whole army of around 300,000 men were ordered to build this wall. The majority of this army was peasants, but soldiers, musicians, teachers, writers, and artist were also ordered to work on it. Most of the people that worked on the great wall were sent by the emperor into exile in the north. The laborers who worked on the wall labored under difficult conditions. They had to work through cold in the winter and flaming sun in the summer.
